Jonathan Riberdy of Zhiibaahaasing First Nation receives the 2021 National First Nations Water Leadership Award

December 9 2021 - Today, we’re congratulating our very own Jonathan Riberdy on receiving the 2021 National First Nations Water Leadership Award.

Jonathan is the Water Plant Operator and Community Monitoring Project Manager for Zhiibaahaasing First Nation, assisted by Chelsea Antoine, Community Monitoring Coordinator. Over the years, he has tirelessly dedicated his time and energy to his waters and to his community, working for a swimmable, drinkable, fishable future for now and generations to come.

We at Swim Drink Fish cannot think of a more deserving recipient of the 2021 National First Nations Water Leadership Award—an award which recognizes and honours leaders who guide, influence and inspire their communities while working for their right to clean and safe drinking water.

Beyond his work advocating for clean water, Jonathan is a mentor for youth in his community, providing both scientific and traditional knowledge to help foster the next generation of Indigenous water stewards

“I’m ecstatic about this award, but also humbled. Helping my community is the most important thing, and I didn’t accomplish what I did alone. It wasn’t just me who did all this work. But I’m trying to do my part and stand up for water and stand up for what’s right in the world, even when others don’t.”
