Swim Drink Fish Canada is a charity dedicated to ensuring swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for everyone. By using community science and storytelling, we inspire millions of people to know and safeguard their waters. We have teams across Canada.

Job Description
The Community-Based Water Monitoring Seasonal Coordinator (Toronto) will help monitor water quality at underserved beaches in Toronto, by collecting and processing samples, sharing water quality results with the community, and engaging the community with water quality programming and water literacy work. You will help operate the Toronto location of our network of water monitoring hubs across Canada.
You will be reporting to our Science Coordinator and working alongside other staff and volunteers. We work as a team and are always willing to help each other.
This position will include working outside the field and in our lab, as well as computer work from home, so reliable internet access is important. The ability and willingness to travel within Toronto is important.
This position is equally water science and community engagement focused. Having experience or interest in both aspects is considered an asset.
Here’s what you get to do...
Work with staff and volunteers to take water samples from sites in and around Toronto.
Process and analyze water quality samples to test for E. coli (we will train you)
Follow water monitoring and health and safety protocols, and ensure others are doing the same.
Manage and support the recruitment of community scientist volunteers
Conduct Environmental Health and Safety Surveys
Ensure proper record-keeping and data entry of water quality data
Upload and share our findings with the community on Swim Guide, our open data portal, and through our social media and communications platforms
Work with local community members/groups to foster regional water literacy by leading community outreach and engagement events (with some evenings and weekends included)
Work with our communications team to contribute to social media (take pictures/video, draft content)
Execute local litter cleanup initiatives
Work with our team and the Manager of Technology and Innovation to compile an end-of-season report on our findings and recommendations for swimmable waters.
Work with our team to continue updating our standard operating procedures and protocols for community-based water monitoring work.

Excellent social and communication skills
A passion for water stewardship and conservation
A passion for working with other community members
A commitment to following health and safety protocols
A commitment to following scientific protocols
Experience working collaboratively with a team
A post-secondary background in biological or environmental science, environmental studies or a related discipline
Be motivated and able to work independently
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends for community engagement activities
Ability to regularly travel to various sites in and around Toronto
