Our waters, our wetlands
On January 30, 2004, Waterkeeper Mark Mattson visited Toronto's St. Briget school to celebrate the unveiling of "Our waters, our wetlands." A description of the project and photos of the event are below.
Under the leadership of visiting artist Pamela Schuller, 459 students from grade 3 to grade 8 worked co-operatively in groups 2 to 6 on each piece of art over a period of 17 days to create this permanent art installation, composed of over 220 pieces.
The project can continue to be integrated into the Arts, Science, English and French curricula as well as being long-term vehicle for fostering the relationships that will promote communication and community among the students, staff, their families and the surrounding neighborhood.
The inclusive nature of the project accommodates all abilities and provided each child with a feeling of ownership and pride in the end result. Philosophically this art creation also acts as a visual medium to demonstrate how everyone?s small contribution adds to the larger picture of life.
