Wolfe Island hockey tournament renamed in honour of Chris Mattson

The 5th Annual Wolfe Island hockey tournament, renamed in honour of (Uncle) Chris Mattson, took place last weekend. Four teams competed for the "Lake Ontario Cup" on the Island's new hockey rink.

Team Lake Ontario Waterkeeper won the tournament, claiming victory over past winners, Toronto Gas Station Islanders, by a score of 6-3 in the finals. The tournament MVP was Waterkeeper goalie Koko Bonaparte.

When the tournament started five years ago, many of the players and organizers dreamed that a rink would eventually be built. Dave Bidini, Waterkeeper Mark Mattson, Wolfe Islanders, musicians and writers all agreed that there is no better place to play hockey outdoors than Wolfe Island!

The rink was eventually built thanks to the hard work of dozens of volunteers, including supporters from the Community Centre: Billy and Michelle Joy, Doug and Rose Corrigan, George McAllister, Colin Mosiers, Danny Mosier, Vinnie Mosier, Steve Fargo, Paul Hogan; the Wolfe Island Music Festival organizers: Virginia Clark and Sarah McDermott; Don Cherry (who made the biggest single contribution to the project); and Canadian Hydro Developer workers and management who donated material and labour for the cement padding. These groups, individuals and many, many more have made the tournament a huge success.

Past winners of the tournament include the Toronto Gas Station Islanders and two-time champs, The Morningstars. The hockey tournament takes place every February and is always open to the public.
