Need a Source? Waterkeeper can help you cover the Scarborough Waterfront Project (Press Release)
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) has announced its intention to move forward with the Scarborough Waterfront Project. If you are a local reporter in Toronto and write about environmental stories, the Scarborough Waterfront Project probably affects you.
Waterkeeper agrees that the project’s goals to improve shoreline access, increase connectivity and restore habitat are important. But Waterkeeper believes that water quality enhancement and watershed protection must be the project’s top priority.
The benefit of monitoring water quality is that it keeps the public informed and provides essential information that can guide restoration efforts. Scarborough’s 11 kilometre stretch of shoreline provides a historic opportunity to nearly triple the length of shoreline that is monitored and open for recreational use. It would increase Toronto’s swimmable water by over 150% and would also set an example for other Great Lake communities to follow.
