Toronto Harbour Monitoring Report 2017: Key Findings and Recommendations
For the second year in a row, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper has released a report on its Toronto Harbour Monitoring Program. The report summarizes key findings and offers recommendations for both waterfront users and the City of Toronto.
Highlights of the report:
From May 17-September 6, Waterkeeper collected 339 samples from three primary locations: Bathurst Quay, Rees St. Slip, and Marina 4.
57% of samples passed standards for swimming, 43% failed.
July 21 was the worst day overall. Every single sample collected failed to meet provincial water quality guidelines.
The highest geometric mean result of the three locations was 6,742 E. coli units at Bathurst Quay.
Main recommendation for waterfront users: the most effective thing a waterfront user can do to help protect the lake they love is to report pollution.
Report contains more detail on the project itself, a breakdown of the results for each of the three sites, Waterkeeper’s three recommendations to the City of Toronto, and more.
