The Lake Ontario Explore Challenge!
For most of my life I’ve lived by Lake Ontario—always steps away from the water's edge. You’d think with that kind of lifetime access I’d be an avid swimmer, boater, or even a fisher. But I’m none of things—my appreciation of the lake has usually been from a distance.
I consider myself a decent paddler and a modest sailor but for some reason I’m usually exploring somewhere else when I’m out on the water. I don’t think I can even remember the last time I walked down to Lake Ontario and launched a boat, jumped in, or even strolled along the boardwalk! When you consider where I live—and where I work—this should seem crazy! But it’s not—and I’m willing to bet I’m not the only one.
Whether you’re mere minutes, or miles, away from the waterfront, we have a beautiful and vast landscape in our backyards—and it’s worth exploring!
This summer Waterkeeper has set a challenge: The Lake Ontario Explore Challenge #LOExplore! We want you to join to get you out discovering the water - the shoreline - the trails of our Lake Ontario.
With a little help from our friends at Trailhead Kingston we’ve put together a list of our favourite spots to paddle, bike, and hike on and around Lake Ontario from the shores of Kingston and Wolfe Island.
To break my dry spell with Lake Ontario, I’m signing up as a Lake Ontario Explore challenger so I can see what I’ve been missing all these years.
P.S Even if you’re not in Kingston or Wolfe Island, there’s still an opportunity for you to get out there and explore. Waterkeeper wants to know your favourite spots and hidden gems out on and around Lake Ontario. So please, share them with us.
From June 30 - August 12 we challenge you to get out and visit these spots - snap your selfie with Lake Ontario - and share and it on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. #LOExplore. For each LOExplore site you share online you’ll be entered for a chance to win one of our #LOExplore prizes.
