NEWS BRIEF: Canada to push forward with Darlington nuclear plant approvals process
Hearing begins Monday despite ongoing situation at Fukushima Daiichi in Japan
(Toronto, Ontario) - Canada’s Nuclear Safety Commission begins a three-week hearing Monday to approve up to four new nuclear reactors in Darlington, on Lake Ontario.
The hearing begins as workers at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi facility fight through one of the worst nuclear crises in history following the recent earthquake and tsunami.
“The nuclear crisis in Japan underscores the importance of detailed planning and meticulous scrutiny. The Darlington New Nuclear Plant hearing offers neither. We don’t even know what kind of reactors will be used,” says Lake Ontario Waterkeeper President, Mark Mattson.
Waterkeeper asked the CNSC to postpone the hearing to allow time to study the Japanese crisis and answer important questions about the Darlington project.
“Lake Ontario provides drinking water to 7-million people in two countries. We can’t afford to get this wrong.”
