Wolfe Island community makes LOK office a success

Four months ago I opened the first Community Development Office for LOK on Wolfe Island, an effort that we hoped would expand LOK?s full-time presence on the lake, as well as serve as a possible model for future organizational growth. The experience taught both LOK and myself a lot about the benefits and challenges to a decentralized model and allowed us to really become integrated into the environmental issues facing the region.

The Wolfe Island office, located at Mosier's Service Centre, provided a point of contact for the community, and put LOK in close proximity to some of its most important work. The Community Development Project conducted investigations, educational initiatives, and coordinated the Wolfe Island Canal Project working under the guidance of the Lakekeeper in Toronto.

The success of the project was only possible because of the support LOK received from the residents of Wolfe Island. LOK?s work on the island, and in the Kingston area, is ongoing, and so while the seasonal office on Wolfe Island is closing, LOK will continue to monitor the region and ensure that environmental laws are being enforced.
