3 live shows raise awareness, cash for Lake Ontario Watershed: Chris Brown, Barenaked Ladies, Sarah Harmer perform this week
This week on 'Living at the Barricades' Sarah Harmer speaks with hosts Mark Mattson and Krystyn Tully about PERL's 'I Love the Escarpment Too' and challenging the Nelson Aggregates quarry operating on the Niagara Escarpment. Mark and Krystyn highlight the busy week of art and activism beginning with Chris Brown's residency at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto.
Three incredible live shows bring art and activism together this week in honour of environmental protection on Lake Ontario's watershed. On Thursday, September 27, Chris Brown wraps up his month-long residency at Toronto's Dakota Tavern. Brown will be joined onstage by The Citizen's Band and our very own Waterkeeper, Mark Mattson. This is your last chance to hear a live performance of Chris' song "Oblivion", featured on Waterkeeper's new CD, At the Barricades: Volume 1. Produced by Brown, the CD includes tracks from other Waterkeeper supporters, including Broken Social Scene, Dave Bidini, Gord Downie, and Sarah Harmer. On Friday, September 28, we take the show on the road, heading to Wolfe Island for the first-ever live taping of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper's radio show, Living At the Barricades. A panel of guests led by Waterkeeper and show-host Mark Mattson will discuss the role of wind power in Ontario and examine some of the concern surrounding the controversial Wolfe Island wind development. We'll talk about clean energy, fish habitat, and protection of migratory birds and bats. Chris Brown, Kate Fenner and Tony Scherr will be on hand to play a live show following the taping. You'll have a chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by Lake Ontario's only rural island community, get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Waterkeeper's radio show, and listen to some of Canada's great indy-folk artists. The event is co-sponsored by CFRC 101.9fm, campus and community radio in Kingston, Ontario. (General Wolfe Hotel, Doors at 8pm, $10 at the door)
On Saturday, Sarah Harmer and her group PERL host an important fundraiser:. I Love the Escarpment Too takes place on Mount Nemo in Burlington, Ontario. The Barenaked Ladies will join Sarah for an afternoon of music and a live auction. All proceeds from the event will help PERL in its mission to proect the Niagara Escarpment. In recent years, Sarah has proved herself to be one of the most dedicated, thoughtful environmental protection advocates in the Lake Ontario watershed. Through her work, we continue to learn about the wetlands, geology, and rare creatures that dot the Niagara Escarpment. Saturday's show is a chance to see Sarah in her element and to support PERL's great work. (Mount Nemo, Burlington, ON, 2-6pm, Tickets are $150).
From one end of the Lake to the other, artists are coming together this week. We want you to be part of it! These shows continue the new tradition of combining art and activism in the name of clean water and strong communities. In 2004, Waterkeeper & Environment Hamilton sponsored the Red Hill Valley Literary Festival featuring Dave Bidini and Sarah Harmer. Last year, we organized the Heart Of A Lake Tour featuring Gord Downie, Andrea Nann and Tanis Rideout. The shows in Toronto, Wolfe Island and Burlington are yet another example of communities coming together to help win back and protect their greatest treasures. We want you to be able to say, "I was there".
