Lakekeeper asks Environment Canada to investigate Port Granby

August 27, 2001

Dave Pascoe, Manager Emergencies and Enforcement Division Environmental Protection Branch, Ontario Region Environment Canada 4905 Dufferin St. Downsview, ON M3H 5T4

Dear Mr. Pascoe,

Please find attached a report by the Lake Ontario Keeper (LOK) dealing with the Port Granby radioactive hazardous waste site situated on the shores of Lake Ontario. The report compiles sampling data and official observations taken from the site. It shows that the waste site has for decades been discharging and leaking large quantities of contaminated groundwater and surface water into the lake and continues to do so at the present time.

I request that you bring this matter to the attention of your enforcement officers and initiate an official investigation for violations of the federal Fisheries Act and Migratory Birds Act. I am available to any officer at any time to discuss the particulars of the report and to provide as much assistance to the investigation as requested.

While I fully expect your officers will conduct independent sampling and analysis of the discharges from the site, I would be pleased to discuss in detail the particulars of our own sampling results and observations made over the past four years.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Mark Mattson Lakekeeper
