Request to City of Hamilton to postpone construction

October 17, 2003

Mayor Robert Wade
City of Hamilton

Dear Mayor Wade,

As you are aware, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper has asked Ontario's Minister of Environment to review the approval granted for the construction of the Red Hill Creek Expressway. This request was made pursuant to S. 11(4) of the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.

We request that the City of Hamilton await a decision from the minister before undertaking any further construction activities in the Red Hill Valley. As eighteen years have passed since the approval in question was granted, we do not anticipate that a short delay at this time will have a significant adverse effect on city traffic.

As recently as October 2, we have received a letter from the Director of the Environmental Assessment and Approvals Branch indicating ministry staff are reviewing the concerns raised in our letter. A copy of our request is attached for your information.

Yours truly,

Mark Mattson
President & Waterkeeper
