Year of the Salish Sea
The Year of the Salish Sea initiative was started in the Fall 2021 Semester by the Salish Sea cohort. It’s a cohort of 12 students that range in academic disciplines, guided by 3 instructors. The Year of the Salish Sea runs from June 8, 2022-June 7, 2023. The aim is to bring together local First Nations, municipalities, organizations, and individuals in the Salish Sea ecosystem region to strengthen existing efforts working towards a healthy Salish Sea through public engagement and the spreading of stewardship and educational opportunities.
“Collaboration and dialogue are essential to creating a future with clean water. It’s important to convene what is already being done to figure out where organizations and individuals can lift each other up, coordinate ideas, and determine what’s needed to continue moving forward. And having open dialogues across generations of water stewards is a necessary step in passing down important knowledge, honouring those who have started this work before us, and avoiding shifting baselines.”- Tasha Romeyn, Project Co-Lead, Year of the Salish Sea
