Mattson & Barlow to speak in Oshawa Friday about harbour issues

Event: Friday, October 11 in Oshawa @ 7 p.m.

This Friday, Mark Mattson and Maude Barlow will be in Oshawa to speak about the importance of a swimmable, drinkable, fishable Oshawa waterfront. Mark and Maude both believe the Oshawa community has demonstrated remarkable courage over the years in the fight for a harbour that is safe to swim, drink, and fish.

Back in 2011, Krystyn Tully penned a newsletter describing Waterkeeper’s take on the Oshawa Harbour story. In a nutshell: People love the harbour. It’s amazing. The federal government and its Port Authority want to use precious harbour resources to benefit a small group of private interests. They can do it because changes to environmental law that started in the 1990s minimized the importance of the public interest when it comes to Canadian waterways. The people of the city have an alternative waterfront vision that helps more people and promotes a more sustainable future. They aren’t being heard. That makes us sad. But they keep on fighting and keep on pushing closer to success. And that inspires us.
