MEDIA ALERT: Lake Ontario Waterkeeper Comments on Pickering Nuclear Life Extension
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAKE ONTARIO WATERKEEPER COMMENTS ON PICKERING
NUCLEAR LIFE EXTENSION
Recommendations submitted to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
In written comments submitted to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper states that the proposed refurbishment of Pickering Nuclear Generating Station B will cause adverse effects that either cannot be mitigated or will not be mitigated by Ontario Power Generation’s proposal.
Waterkeeper recommends that the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission deny Ontario Power Generation’s application to extend the life of the facility or refer the issue to an independent panel for a full environmental assessment. Lake Ontario Waterkeeper highlights concerns that the Pickering nuclear plant would kill millions of fish each year.
Ontario Power Generation is seeking a new license to extend the life of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station B to 2060. The application triggered the federal environmental assessment process.
