Swim Drink Fish submission for Ontario’s environment plan

This week Swim Drink Fish submitted comments to the Government of Ontario on its provincial environment plan.

As a Swim Drink Fish initiative, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper hopes the province will understand the deep and profound importance of water, especially the Great Lakes, to this province after reading this submission. Waterkeeper wants this understanding to inform how the province safeguards water in this region.

Swim Drink Fish learned about the proposed plan in November 2018. Shortly after, the province posted the plan on the Environmental Registry of Ontario for public comment. The 60-day comment period closed January 28, 2019.

In the plan, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks highlights sewage-overflow measures. Waterkeeper has a well-documented history working on sewage pollution issues and prepared six recommendations focusing on those measures.

To assist the province, Swim Drink Fish prepared a model sewage alert policy.
