Ontario’s ever growing heap of high-level nuclear waste
Ontario has a growing amount of extremely radioactive waste. And the plans for Pickering, Darlington, and Bruce will mean more waste will continue to accumulate on our freshwater shores for decades to come. In a time when there is more promotion for nuclear because it's “green,” why isn’t Canada’s nuclear waste problem discussed more often; by government, the regulator, or the media?
Canadian Nuclear Association clings to inaccurate, unsupported claims
When the Toronto Star published a Greenpeace op-ed critical of nuclear power, Canada's largest nuclear lobby group was quick to defend its technology. "Nuclear is clean," declared Denise Carpenter, President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association in her letter to the editor. The problem is, Ms. Carpenter is quite wrong. So wrong, in fact, that earlier this summer Advertising Standards Canada formally decided that ads by the Power Workers' Union making a similar claim were inaccurate, unsupported, and misleading.

Have you ever looked at advertisements for nuclear power and wondered how organizations such as the Power Workers' Union can call nuclear reactors "emission free?" We see similar phrases all the time in print media, on the web, and in statements by elected officials. The problem is, it just isn't accurate to say that nuclear power is "emission free." Nuclear reactors emit all kinds of foul things into the environment, and industry and government know it.
